Resin Features

Resins play a critical role in fiber-reinforced composites, and their performance must meet the following fundamental requirements: good mechanical properties, excellent adhesion, sufficient toughness, and outstanding environmental resistance.

Mechanical Properties of Resins
An ideal resin system should possess high ultimate strength and stiffness, along with a significant failure strain, enabling it to remain rigid under load while avoiding brittle fracture. When the composite material is subjected to tensile forces, the deformation capability of the resin should at least match that of the reinforcing fibers to fully utilize the strength potential of the fibers. For instance, the fracture elongation of S-glass fibers is approximately 5.3%. Therefore, the fracture elongation of the resin used should also reach a similar level to ensure optimal tensile performance of the composite material.

Adhesion Properties of Resins
The resin must form a strong bond with reinforcing materials such as glass fibers to ensure effective load transfer during stress application, preventing debonding or cracking at the fiber-resin interface.

Toughness of Resins
Toughness reflects the materials ability to resist crack propagation. Generally, the greater the deformation a resin can withstand before failure, the better its toughness, and the less prone the resulting composite material is to cracking. The toughness of the resin must be compatible with the elongation properties of the fibers used to avoid brittle failure of the composite material during service.

Weather Resistance of Resins
The resin system must exhibit good weather resistance, including resistance to water, chemical media, and cyclic stresses. This is particularly important in corrosive environments such as marine settings, chemical containers (e.g., FRP storage tanks, absorption towers, scrubbers, and other equipment), and acid storage tanks (e.g., hydrochloric acid tanks, sulfuric acid tanks), as it directly affects the long-term reliability of composite material products.
